So you don’t have to spend to muck money on a new laptop.
If you want to speed up notebook you should prepare first
By boosting memory, you can speed up file writes with a faster hard disk, while increasing your system’s ability to run multiple applications. Notebook computers don’t have as wide an upgrade option as desktops, but it is useful to know that this is not difficult. All you need is a little preparation.
With the experience of disassembling many laptop computers and completely changing their components, we share with you the details from choosing the best tools to what to do and how.
Updating a laptop is very different from updating a desktop PC. When you disassemble the case of an ordinary desktop PC, the motherboard is there with easily accessible expansion slots, processor and drivers.
What’s combined in a laptop is compressed into a much smaller space and often layered. We’ve also seen some farsighted manufacturers design to provide easy access to parts that can be upgraded.
There are also manufacturers who do not hide them. There are also products that require you to remove the keyboard and sometimes other components to upgrade your device.
What’s the need for an upgrade?
There are three valid reasons to upgrade your laptop. First and foremost, cost. You can easily extend the laptop’s lifespan with an affordable upgrade.
Diassamling your laptop’s case for repairs is another reason. Laptops are susceptible to drops and bumps; Components with movable parts may break or something may come off. If you know how to replace a keyboard or optical drive, you can save a lot of the cost of repairs worth a fortune from the technical service.
The third reason is some upgrades that you can do yourself. By planning these, you can plan your speed up notebook work and turn it into a better, more powerful and faster device. Installing the latest wireless network card or Solid State Disk (SSD) can elevate your laptop from a sluggish assistant to a fast desktop PC.
Before we start…
It is important to start with the right tools. While modern computer cases have lids that open easily and can be opened without a screwdriver, you’ll need at least a screwdriver to open the laptop. You can use small tip sets for this.
Some laptops like Dell and Apple have special screws and you must use a Phillips screwdriver for this. In rare cases, you may need a soldering device, which you can get from a hardware store.
Many laptops have plastic clips. To remove them, you need to push the clip with a thin-head screwdriver without pressing. If you break them, the case will not be as solid as before when you close it.
No laptop system is alike. Even products with the same screen size have different cases, and even their screws are not in the same place. You may have to remove the keyboard or remove the entire back cover to get to a screw.
Unplug the laptop from power and battery before starting work. Then close the cover and look at the slots by turning the back. If you haven’t seen how to access which component, refer to the user manual.
Some manufacturers also make manuals available online. Dell and HP are examples. If that doesn’t help either, you can search for the model and access some hardware enthusiast’s guides.
List technical specifications
It is important for the upgrade to see the features of your laptop in detail. Having a free USB or SATA slot, whether the optical drive is standard size or not, the type of memory used helps you get the parts that work for you in the upgrade. If not all the specifications are listed in the manual that came with your computer, you can also do this using free software tools.
The Windows System Information tool can tell you the drivers, their interfaces, and memory type in the system. It also shows the software licenses and passwords in case you reinstall the operating system so that you can back them up and make an easy installation later.
A similar software is called CPU-Z. This free software provides detailed hardware information and also allows you to benchmark. So you can see how much the performance has improved by doing small tests before and after the upgrade.
Some guides recommend performing a BIOS upgrade before adding new hardware. In our opinion, this is only necessary in two situations: If you are installing hardware that the BIOS does not support, or if the system review tools say that it is having problems with the BIOS.
To do this, you no longer need to use DOS as before. Most manufacturers can do this with tools running under Windows. However, it is a good idea to read the instructions that came with your BIOS version.
Please note that if there is a problem during the BIOS upgrade, you will not be able to open your system by yourself and technical service intervention will be required. Of course, this will be a waste of time, as well as a financial loss.
Let’s start to the upgrades
Now that you have the right tools and have identified the parts to replace, we can begin the upgrade process.
As with desktop upgrades, the power must be unplugged. You should also shut down your system. It should not be in the Standby or Hibernation phase. Once you are sure, remove the battery. This is very important because you could damage or crash your equipment.
In the next step, remove the static electricity in your body by touching a metal object, if you are going to work for a long time, you should continue to do this at regular intervals.
After unscrewing the back screws of the case and removing the cover, slowly remove the parts and pay special attention to the small cables. Unless you have to access the motherboard or power supply, you will rarely need to completely disassemble it.
If you separate the screws carefully, you should have no difficulty re-installing them. We recommend you to collect the screws on these papers by writing down which screw was removed from where and on a small piece of paper. Even writing down the number of screws on this paper will make your job easier later on.
Otherwise, your speed up notebook operation may end up in big troubles. Of course, this situation is also fixed by our experience.
As with desktop PCs, it’s usually easy to upgrade memory on laptop PCs. In most cases, you can access the memory slots without opening the entire machine; most laptop systems today access memory by removing a cover.
Adding memory improves system performance by reducing the virtual memory requirement. The more memory available, the more efficiently software and games run.
Windows 11 is to use the ReadyBoost feature. Unless, of course, your operating system is installed on the SSD. Otherwise, it disables this feature. Readyboost uses the flash memory installed in the system as drive cache. We recommend using a memory with low latency or U3 specification for this.
If your system has more than 4GB of memory, this feature is not a win. However, if you have 4 GB or less of memory, it is possible to increase your system performance by up to 10 percent by adding at least 8 GB of flash memory. It creates a hybrid system with flash memory inserted into the PCI Express mini card slot and reduces the load on the hard disk by moving frequently used files there.
Hard and optical drives
In 2022, although almost no laptop will have an optical drive anymore, you will need the following information when updating your legacy systems.
Although laptop hard drives are generally similar and come in a 2.5-inch form factor, there is a wide variety of ways to attach to the laptop. Some can be easily removed by removing a cover on the bottom, while there are models that can be installed from the side, such as an optical drive. There are even products that force it to open the entire safe by placing it under other components.
Once you find the disk, it’s relatively easy to replace it.

However, if you still prefer the models that your manufacturer uses in similar products, you can make the cover color or front plate match.
You can easily remove it by unscrewing a few screws and pulling the drive out. It is easier to attach.
